What a difference a day makes ...

... this morning, Layne was sitting up in the chair and he was considerably and noticeably better. Much more alert, not coughing, better breathing.

Well, he had walked and did very well. He also had eaten solid food although it was soft. All in all there was much relief on both our parts and the care that he had been given overnight was very good.

I met with the discharge planner after being sent through Kaiser Voice Mail Hell. "A joy with lots of assistance." I'm beginning to sound like Layne. Layne noted that my questions were ones that the guy did not expect .. I thought they were pretty simple ... but it's okay .. my confidence level was on the rise.

I saw him walk in the afternoon and while it was shorter and he did have breathing problems .. they were not as severe as yesterday.

They are talking about him coming home... maybe as soon as tomorrow ... but our agreed process is to make sure that we can handle the transition and his arrival .... not to be dramatic ... but we want to know how to handle all of this in our little abode that doesn't have Code Blue!

It has been an experience and an education. On the up side .. Layne read the blog today for the first time since his last entry and he was moved by your comments and best wishes ...

just keep those comments comin!

Hi Layne and Steve,

I've been thinking about you.

It's so good to hear that all is as well as possible and that Layne is on his way toward healing. Having watched some of my family members go through open heart surgery, I understand how big a deal it is and respect much patience and courage it takes to undergo.

Thank you Steve for all of your thoughtful updates...thank goodness you have such a strong meditation background and can call on your practice during times like these. It really comes through in your writing.

I'm in natural chef school right now, and part of our curriculum focuses on therapeutic foods for recovery...so when Layne gets out of the hospital and can eat solid foods again, I've got plenty ideas for heart-healthy meals ! Just let me know if you would like me to share them.

Much love to you both...take care of yourself Layne and may all the positive healing powers of the universe be with you!! (That sounds a little like star wars doesn't it? Obi wan...can you hear me obi wan...)

Greetings From San Diego :)

Happy to read that all's going well for both of you. Appears as if Layne and Obama are both winning the fight and doing it very well!

Thanks to Steve for keeping us all informed, even as he deals with the medical situation and life in general.

There's no place like home. Pleased that Layne is heading that way!

Hi Layne and Steve!
It's good to see things are improving. Layne, I guess my services are not needed any time soon!
Thanks Steve for keeping us informed and Layne for not behaving too badly.
Our visitors from China have gone back to Beijing and I'll have more time to email.
Mike (Dave) and I will continue to follow your progress. If you're bored, I sent links to the pictures from David and Roman's visit to Maryland.May you come home soon but not too soon if you know what I mean!
May the force be with you both!
Steve, Mike and I hope to meet you one day!
Carol Dave (Mike) says "Hey!" as well!

Hi Layne and Steve,

(I have never met you Steve, but I have heard all kinds of stories about you).

Layne, I am glad that all is going well but I knew this right from the onset. I am sorry that I am not over in CA to visit you. It would have been an experience to find out just what a hospital gown looks like when it is worn with a bow tie.

I am certain that nature will take its course and that soon you'll be ready to leave the hospital. By then I'll bet that most of the nurses in the Cardiac Unit are ready to take their DRE exams.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and thank you for keeping all of us posted.
